i put hay in my dogs house so they would have warmth for the winter but my brother said that hay would harbor heartworms and that kinda stuff. he said that i should use pine straw so can you use hay in a doghouse. (its bermuda hay)
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, not hay. If you buy good quality hay, there shouldn’t be any parasites at all in it unless they were already present on your dog. It’s perfectly fine to use but make sure you change it often so your dog always has a clean, dry bed. My dogs have always been house dogs but growing up we would put hay in their dog houses to keep them warm if they were outside for a bit. Never had a problem with it and the dogs loved to snuggle into it. I personally prefer timothy or alfalfa just because it smells really nice. Just watch that your dog doesn’t decide to eat it. If he does, you’ll need to find an alternative bedding. Hay and straw can cause intestinal damage if ingested.
Yes you can we did for the winter and she was fine stuff it in a pillowcase its just like a heated pillow. Go for it.

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes that have already bitten an infected animal. Why someone would think hay harbors HW is rather odd. Most insects like fleas & mosquitoes die due to the freezing temps. Hay is fine to use & better choice than pinestraw.

Heartworm is not caused by hay. The only thing I can think of that your brother might be confused about is 1. Horses eat hay, 2. Dogs who eat horse feces can get worms if the horse is passing worms.
To answer your question: no, bedding your doghouse with hay will not cause your dog to get heartworm, or any other kind of worms. If that were so, every dog I’ve ever owned would have heartworm (we have had dogs and horses fro 25+ years, and I have never had a dog get heartworm!).

Yes, you canput hay in your dog’s dog house. Although, I would recommend you put straw in the dog house instead. Straw is used as a natural bedding for many different types of animals. I would take a blanket or a rug and put that as the base, if you want you can use a dog bed. Then, put the straw on top of that. It works well and does keep the dog warm. Straw is very safe to use and is used as bedding in many places. Hay, you can use but it tends to mold or rot if it gets wet. This is a problem if you’re not going to change it. Straw doesn’t rot and absorbs pretty well, so if you’re not going to change it then use straw.

Yes you can put hay in the dog house. I prefer Straw though, it is looser and can be moved easily to fit the comfort of the dog. I never needed it, but my old boss kept her "breeding" dogs outside 24/7 (which i don’t agree with on soooo many levels, including the breeding of chocolate lab with a yellow lab cross) and they were comfortable with straw because they could make a "nest" out of it.
